Exhaust clean-up technology is regarded by the maritime industry as an alternative to using low-sulphur fuels. The technology varies greatly, however, but the ultimate goal is to clean up emissions coming from a ship's smokestack. Under International Maritime Organization (IMO) revised MARPOL Annex VI regulations (see library page), certified scrubbing systems are permitted as an alternative to low-sulphur fuel.
